Taking the Breakfast Bar Out

This morning I did some incline walking on the treadmill at the gym. There is a 20-minute time limit on the equipment, and most of the equipment is set up so that it automatically times out after 20 minutes. If it's quiet in the gym and I want to use something for longer than 20 minutes, I usually restart the machine at the 20-minute mark and keep going.

Today I used a treadmill I hadn't been on before and it didn't time out after 20 minutes. There was another other treadmill free, so I decided to keep going on the one I was on, since there no-one was waiting to use a machine. After I had been going for 37 minutes I heard the woman on the treadmill behind me get off, walk up behind me (to see what my console display said), then go back to her machine. Then I heard the muttering begin: 'Thiry-seven minutes! Grumble, grumble. Thiry-seven minutes! Grumble, grumble'. I couldn't make out exactly what she was saying, but I could gather she wasn't happy about the amount of time I was spending on treadmill. I couldn't work out why, since she was on a treadmill, and there were other machines free.

I finished up at 45 minutes, then spent a couple of minutes cooling down before jumping off. As I walked away I could hear the woman saying 'Forty-seven minutes! Grumble, grumble. Forty-seven minutes! Grumble, grumble'.

I stretched quickly and left the gym, but it wasn't a great start to my day to (literally) have someone talking about me behind my back. And this from a woman who runs on the treadmill while holding onto the console.

Any suggestions about what to do if she does it again?

Before the new kitchen cabinets can go in, the old ones have to come out. I have this week off work so today I took out the breakfast bar and surrounding cabinets.

Before

After

I will call the plumber tomorrow about getting the pipes capped so I can take out the sink and remaining cabinets.

God, what a nutter! I have no idea what I would have said, Charlotte, but I'd have said something. Probably something rude. LOL.

Oh, and how exciting that you're getting started on your new kitchen!

Hi Kek, she always comes into the gym with a sour look on her face. Maybe she's one of those people that likes to have something to complain about!

And yes, it's great to get started on the kitchen!

"Smile" and walk away, or "Have a great day."

You're one handy woman :)

PS R u on Facebook? Do you know how many Charlotte Orr's there are in the world?

I agree with Kek, Charlotte. I would have said something. Though I admit, I probably wouldn't have heard the sour thing comment anyway, as I always wear my I-pod to shut out the noise...lol...
I think if you said it, just like you reasoned, i.e. there were free machines, so it's not hurting anyone, then you'd probably find she'd back off. And if she still complains and grumbles, just keep flashing her a smile, and that might piss her off! :P
Oh...can't wait to see the new kitchen. :)

God I hate that - I'd be tempted just to ask her what the problem is... like, do you have anything you'd like to say TO me? but yes, she's obviously nuts. lol.

Charlotte, that sucks. I might have said, "jealous, biatch?" (in my dreams of course, I'm not usually that brave).
Great news about the kitchen, it's really coming together!

Hi Shelley, great suggestions! Thanks for looking for me on Facebook - I did have an account but I deleted it because it got hacked.

Hi Kerry, I don't have an i-Pod, otherwise I probably would have been oblivious to it all! I'm not great at talking to people in confronting situations, so seems like a smile might be the way to go. I can't wait to see the new kitchen too!

Hi Steph, yeah, she could have just said something to me instead of talking about me. It made me not want to go back to the gym at that time again.

LOL, thanks Liz!

Just keep your towel over the display so she can't see how many minutes you have done to grumble about... LOL!! Then clear it before she can see it when you get off. Or if you hear her get off to check the display, make a big deal of putting the towel over the display and start grumbling yourself about how people can't mind their own damn business in an empty cardio studio... LMAO!! I do love Shelley's idea though... killing them with kindness always works. A big smile at her and ask her if she has lost weight since you saw her last because she looks amaaaaaaaazing!! Bet she never complains about you again after that =)

Hi Charlotte :)

How rude! I don't know what I would have done either! But my mother has always said smiling and being the 'bigger' person is the best way to go lol
It's a shame she had no other focus- you must have looked pretty good to keep her attention that long! :)
