Measurements and Meal Plan

Weight: 66kg

So even though I didn't get much exercise done this week, due to being sick, sticking to my meal plan means I've lost a kilo. Although some of that could be water weight, since no workout means no post workout meal (higher carb content); instead I substituted with protein powder, seeds and fruit.

So no changes for next week. I'll keep doing what I did this week: first four meals the same each day, a different dinner each day. Here's the plan (click to enlarge):

Food prep today for next week:
- make almond milk, wash and chop kale
- precook quinoa
- make soup
- hard boil eggs, make hummus, chop celery and cauli

I also made some chocolate peanut butter bars for Rob.

Epiphany

Because I'm a 'control freak' and a bit of a stickler for 'following the rules', I tend to follow recipes pretty closely, including the vegetables used. So when I plan out my dinners for the week and do my fruit and vege order, I include all the vegetables in the recipes I'm using. Which can be time consuming: on Monday I need x for this recipe, and on Tuesday I need x for this recipe, etc. And I end up spending more time thinking about food and shopping on the internet than I'd really like to. Fruit is not so bad because I just get a 'seasonal fruit box' along with the vegetables, and often end up with more variety than if I just chose the fruit myself.

Today I had an epiphany. Why not get a 'vegetable box' instead of getting specific veges for each recipe? That way I don't have to spend so long thinking and shopping. Sure I won't be following the recipes exactly, but I know enough about food that I can substitute one thing for another, and surely it's better to eat what's in season than follow a recipe exactly?

So from Friday next week I will trial getting both seasonal fruit and vege boxes. Score one for time management!

Sick

Pretty crappy week this week. Caught Rob's cold and it's TTOM. So no training done today. And I was really keen to get into my new program too...

Eating all going well though. Am really enjoying my food at the moment. Just two changes I want to make for next week:
1. Precook my soup in the crockpot for the whole week, rather than making a little serve each day.
2. Give the Teresa Cutter dinner recipes a rest for a bit and throw in a few other things I've been wanting to try. I saw some rabbit legs at the market the other day and have been thinking about braising them with mushrooms and red wine. Will see if I can pick some up on the weekend. And when I asked our house guest if he had any requests for next week he asked for pie, so am going to do a shepherd's pie with a mashed pumpking topping. Plus there's the lamb kebabs I've been thinking about from the Precision Nutrition cookbook. And the salmon nicoise recipe I picked up from the fish shop the other day...

Meal Planner

Now that I'm using Office 2007, I've found a new Excel template to use - a weekly meal planner. I've entered this week's meals into it (altering the column headers to suit me) and copied it below. Click the pic to see the full-size version.

New Template

I've updated my template, so if you are viewing this post in a reader, visit my blog to check out my new look. I'll be adding more content over the next few weeks.

Sunday 26 July

Measurements
Weight: 67kgs

I'm roughly a kilo lighter than I was before I went away at the start of the month. Not too bad considering I was only exercising a couple of times a week. So I'm going to continue eating as I have been, but just make sure I'm getting all my exercise in. Hopefully that will keep the scales moving downwards.

Menu Planning
Plan for the next seven days:

7am: shake made with 1 sc Sun Warrior, 1/2 c almond milk, 1 c water, 1/2 banana, 1 c kale; 6 fish oil, vit B

Workout

10 am: 1 sc Sun Warrior, 1 serve Vital Greens; 'muesli' made with 1 grated apple, cinnamon, 1 Tbsp sunflower seeds, quinoa

Friday 24 July

Finally got myself a new computer. It's a Hewlett Packard Probook 4710S

It's a desktop replacement. I work from home but don't always like to be in my office, so I decided to go for the portability of a laptop.

It comes with Windows Vista Business, but it's got the downgrade to Windows XP Professional pre-installed, which suits me as that's the operating system I'm used to using and I don't have time to learn something new before I start my next job next week.

It's not particularly travel-friendly (around 3kg, and described as 'huge and heavy' in this review), but I'm mostly going to be using it around the house or outside, or maybe at a local cafe. It does have good battery life for such as large laptop though. Why so large? Because I work with text all day it was important for me to have a big screen, and this one has a 17 inch widescreen, which means I can have two documents open side by side. It also has an anti-glare (matt) screen, which makes for easier reading, especially if I'm sitting in a sunny spot.

Other bonuses: wi-fi; bluetooth (so I can easily use a wireless mouse and keyboard with it if I want to); integrated microphone and webcam (Skype!?); separate numeric keypad (I hate using the numbers above the QWERTY keys - I'm much faster with a numeric keypad!); spill-resistant keyboard, and 'driveguard' to protect the hard drive against impact, bumps or drops (Charlotte-proof!). And HP say that its Business Notebook PCs are designed to reduce their impact on the environment by eliminating or reducing substances of concern, using fewer resources, reducing energy consumption, and designing for recyclability.

Now I just have to get it out of the box and set it up...

Wed 22 July

Three - that's how many people in my family now have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is, according to Health Insite, an auto-immune disease in which the body's immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This type of diabetes, also known as juvenile-onset or insulin-dependent diabetes, accounts for 10-15% of all people with the disease. It can appear at any age, although commonly under 40, and is triggered by environmental factors such as viruses, diet or chemicals in people genetically predisposed. People with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin several times a day and follow a careful diet and exercise plan.

The other 85-80% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. According to Diabetes NSW, type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas is not producing enough insulin and the insulin is not working effectively. Risk factors include family history, being overweight and ethnic background. Lifestyle factors such as unhealthy eating and lack of physical activity can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. While it usually affects mature adults, more young people, and even children, are being diagnosed.

Recording my meal times is proving useful. About 60 minutes after eating my PWO meal I was finding it hard to think straight so started making my next meal. Tells me I need to make my PWO meal a bit bigger next time.

Have run out of rice protein so am using up some leftover whey until my order arrives. My tummy can tell the difference!

Tues 21 July

Time to get back into it.

My main areas for improvement are:
Training - I need to get up and do it even if I don't feel like it
Mental - I need to apply more positive thinking in all areas of my life, and to repeat daily mantras to set myself up mentally for success
Recovery - I need to spend more quality time with family and friends, and make sure I get enough sleep, both of which can be fixed by spending less time on the internet

I've chosen to use some of the affirmations and dinners out of the 80/20 Diet book for the next little while.

This week's affirmation: whatever I believe I can achieve

8.30: 1 Tbsp Vital Greens, 1 tsp BCAAs, 1/2 small banana

Sun 19 July

Since being here I have been into the Untouched World outlet store twice. It sells natural and organic fashion and sportwear. On my first visit I got a long-sleeve black tee made from organic cotton, and a short-sleeve tee with a cowl neck made from super fine organic merino. Today I went back and got a white long-sleeve T and a pair of charcoal pants. Hopefully that will get me through the rest of winter!

Sat 18 July

Today was STRESSFUL!

We were due to fly back to Melbourne today for Rob's tournament tomorrow and work on Monday. Except our passports were missing. I took them to a copy shop yesterday and didn't realise until today that I'd left them there. Normally the shop is open on Saturdays, but it was closed today. And the owner couldn't be contacted by phone. Thoughts of stolen passports and forgeries crossed our minds. We had until two hours before our flight to find the passports - after that we could no longer transfer the flights to a different day. The two-hour mark came but no joy, so we canceled our tickets and arranged to fly back once we had found our passports or got new ones. Not long after that the shop owner got in touch - he had been on a course all day and had been rejecting incoming calls on his mobile. He had the passports. It was too late for us to get back on tonight's flight. And tomorrow night's flight is fully booked. So looks like we will be here until Monday night. At least the passports were found. If we'd had to get urgent passports for the two of us it could have been a very expensive trip!

Friday 17 July

Second-last day here. Hormones have been a bit up and down the last couple of days. Have been having more soy than usual while away so will try cutting back on that once home and see if it makes any difference. Had my hair trimmed this afternoon, which was nice and relaxing - quiet salon, nice hairdresser who did a great pressure-point treatment on my scalp while I was at the basin, and nice blowdry that didn't pull on my head too much!

Mon 13 July

Was doing band pull-ups on the playground equipment at the park today when my 3.5-year-old nephew decided to have a conversation with me:
'Why are you doing that?'
'Because I want to be strong'
'Why?'
'Umm...'
'Do you want bigger boobies?'
At which point I burst out laughing and couldn't continue.

Breakfast: poached eggs, baked beans, Vital Greens, 4 fish oil, vit B

Sun July 12

Caught up with Rob today after not seeing him for a couple of days. Funny how earlier in our relationship we spent two one-year stints apart but now we don't know how we did it.

Rob thinks my tight lower back is caused by tight QL muscles - not enough stretching after my sprints the other day.

Am staying at my sisters tonight. Her three little boys are a laugh. Was good to have some quiet time to chat after they'd all gone to bed though.

I've been pretty hungry the last couple of days - lots more snacks than usual. It may be because I've been having a different lunch and it hasn't been keeping me as full as usual. But cutting the fish oils back probably hasn't helped.

Breakfast: 1 sc Sun Warrior, 1 c almond milk, 1/2 small banana, spinach; 4 fish oil, Supreme greens, multi

Snack: boiled eggs, hummus, carrot

Lunch: mixed beans; salad with red cabbage, spinach, toasted nori, yellow pepper, sesame seeds, balsamic vinegar, horseradish cream; 4 fish oil

Snack: dried edamame, pumpkin seeds, mandarin

Snack: canned salmon, canned peaches

Dinner: roasted chicken breast, brussel sprouts, broccoli, zucchini, carrot; 4 fish oils

Snack: 1 sc Sun Warrior, peanut butter, flax meal; canned peaches

Snack: dried edamame

Sat July 11

Tired today. Not sure if it's because I haven't been having my Vital Greens the last week or so (left it somewhere and have been substituting with another product that's not as comprehensive) or because I haven't had many starchy carbs the last few days. It's TTOM as well, which doesn't help. In any case, added a multivitamin this morning and had some sweet potato (with steak and salad) for dinner with my parents.

Breakfast: 1 sc Sun Warrior, 1 c almond milk, 1/2 small banana, spinach; 4 fish oil, Supreme greens, multi

Snack: dried edamame, pumpkin seeds, orange

Lunch: mixed beans; salad made with red cabbage, spinach, nori, yellow pepper, sesame seeds, balsamic vinegar and horseradish cream; 4 fish oil. Will swap balamic for tamari and horseradish for wasabi next time I think.

Snack: hummus, carrot, red pepper

Dinner: steak, sweet potato, salad, 1 glass cab sav; 4 fish oil

Snack: 'muesli' made with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, flax seeds, grated apple and almond milk

Snack: boiled eggs, almonds, pear, banana

Friday 10 July

Hopped on scales this morning as it might be the last chance I get to use some digital ones for a while. Am down 700g since last weekend, although the last couple of days have been low starchy carb since no exercise.

Spent about three hours travelling by car this morning, and then lifted my suitcase out of the boot and my lower back has been a bit sore since. Sitting then lifting not good.

Good luck to all those competing at the All Female this weekend. Wish I was there to watch!

Hungry today. I was up about three hours earlier than normal though, and some of my meals were a bit smaller than usual.

Breakfast: shake made with 1 sc Sun Warrior, 1/2 banana, spinach; 4 fish oil, Supreme greens, vit B

Snack: soy latte, pumpkin seeds, orange

Wed 8 July, decrease fish oil

Felt really tired last night, like I was about to come down with something. Decided to take today off training to recharge. Turns out it was just TOM arriving. AND I've got sore quads, hammies and abs from sprints yesterday. Spent most of the day today sorting through Rob's dad's things. Still have kitchen, photos and music to go.

Ran out of fish oil this morning. Got some more this afternoon but it's probably a good time to start cutting back since I've been taking it at high doses for nearly 4 weeks now.

Breakfast: shake made with 1 sc Sun Warrior, 1/2 banana, spinach; 4 fish oil caps, vit B, Supreme greens

Snack: dried edamame, pumpkin seeds, orange

Saturday 4 July

It's been great having some company during my training the last couple of days. Rob wants to do a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament the day after we get home, so he wants to keep up his fitness. Yesterday morning we went out for a walk with his aunty and uncle, and I was just going to go to the end of the street with them and then head back to do my band and bodyweight session, but Rob wanted me to keep going, so I said 'OK, if you train with me when we get back,' which he did. Then this morning at his Dad's place we did some energy expenditure work together. We were planning on doing sprints but it was pouring with rain so we stayed in the garage and did lots of burpees, press ups, bodyweight squats, jumping lunges and kettlebells swings (we didn't actually have any kettlebells so used some firewood instead!). AND Rob said I've lost some weight, yay!

Today's food:

Emirates Business Class

The dining area in the Emirates business class lounge at Melbourne International Airport

My breakfast in the business class lounge:
steak, scrambled egg, baked beans, tomato, mushrooms, plus sparkling mineral water and a skinny flat white (not pictured)

On the plane - check out the leg room!

Moet & Chandon champagne while taxiing - I only had a few sips as they cleared it away before take-off

Then we got mixed nuts and I had some sparkling mineral water

My two-course low-calorie meal:
fresh fruit, yoghurt, and a little cake for 'dessert' (think it was made with quinoa flour but I didn't eat it)

fish, fennel, broccolini, tomato, rice (I didn't eat the rice)

Rob's gluten free meal:

Wednesday 1 July

Tomorrow we fly out to New Zealand for a couple of weeks. After Rob's dad's funeral we had to come back to Australia for work, but we now have some time to go back and sort through his things and tidy the place up. Will try and keep posting while I'm away...

No workout today. Wiped after only having three hours' sleep and trying to get everything done before leaving. Bit of a mixed-up day today foodwise. Trying to use up some food before we go away.
- coffee with lactose-free milk
- Chicken 'Caesar' salad, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- coffee with lactose-free milk
- 1 sc Sun Warrior, apple
- poached eggs on homemade baked beans
- apple, sunflower seeds

The Kindness of Strangers

The other day I mentioned on my blog that I wasn't able to get a copy of the 80/20 Diet book. Pip, who reads my blog, contacted me to say she has it but doesn't really use it and would be happy to send it to me. So I now have a new recipe book in my hot little hands. Thanks Pip!

Tuesday 30 June

Monday 29 June

Was proud of myself for going to the gym this morning. Had lots of work to do and normally I would stress about it and get into it straight after getting up, and then try to get to the gym later in the day (but not always make it). This morning I decided to put my health and fitness first, so off I went to the gym. And felt a lot better for it.

S: 1 sc Sun Warrior, banana, Vital Greens
training: full body
B: 1 sc Sun Warrior, Brown rice porridge with banana and honey, vitamin B
S: apple
L: chicken salad, 1 Tbsp fish oil

Sunday 28 June

Measurements are done!

Since doing my measurements two weeks ago:
- weight is up 500g
- neck, chest, upper arm girths are all the same
- shoulder, thigh and calf girths are up (which I think is good!)
- waist and hip girths are also up (not so good)
So it seems like I've put on a little bit of muscle but also a little bit of fat. Am aiming for fat to go downwards so need to be a bit more conscious of the quantity of food I'm having (main meals are fine, probably just need to cut down on number of snacks). I'm not counting calories so mostly going by 'feel'. Will try and do measurements weekly from now on.

Food today
B: Strawberry power smoothie (with tofu and choc Sunwarrior), vitamin B
S: pear, pumpkin seeds, Vital Greens
walk dog 45 mins
L: Turkey pizza (on gluten-free wrap)
S: coffee with lactose-free milk, apple
D: Lean beef and vege bolognese, 1 Tbsp fish oil
S: pawpaw, hot protein drink, almonds

Saturday 27 June

After a few tears, I managed to recover my document on Rob's laptop. Fixing my computer isn't going to be as straightforward. As well as having a virus it also has something wrong with Windows. I was contemplating getting my own laptop anyway so now might be a good time.

Had an awesome workout today. Felt stronger on almost everything. Wonder if it was something to do with the Sun Warrior beforehand - I wasn't burping up whey protein all the way through like I normally do. Or it could have been the coffee... Or the fruit and beans last night...

- coffee with lactose-free milk
- 1 sc Sunwarrior, 1 banana
train upper body
- 1 sc Sunwarrior, gluten-free pancakes with banana and maple syrup
- Gluten-free chicken wrap, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- Thai beef salad, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- raw vegan brownies YUM!!!
- Vital Greens, carrot
- raw vegan brownies

Friday 26 June

Not a great day workwise - I found a virus on my computer this morning, so used Rob's laptop to work on today. It obviously has a problem too as the file I was working on all day corrupted at the end of the day and I lost all my work...

On the bright side, I think I have lost some weight. Face isn't looking so round, and pants aren't so tight. Am doing weight and measurements over the weekend so guess I'll know for sure then.

Was a bit pushed for time today so just did cardio. Will do upper body in the morning.

- coffee with lactose-free milk
- apple, omega 3 eggs on refried beans, vitamin B
- pumpkin seeds, Vital Greens
- 'Caesar salad', 1 Tbsp fish oil

Tuesday 23 June

Yesterday I remembered to take my vitamin B, I drank more water, I didn't have any coffe, and I spent less time on the computer in the evening. This morning I woke up feeling better than I have for a while, so will try and repeat from now on.

The 80/20 book is no longer available from the supplier, so my order has been cancelled. Oh well, it's not like I need another recipe book. I did have a few exciting things arrive today though: flexbands, and some natural hair care products. I also picked up a king-size woollen underlay for $99.95, reduced from $299.95 - so I'm hoping for a nice warm bed tonight!

Sunday 21 June

The first thing I did this morning was... step in dog poo. I went over the road to let the greyhounds out, and stood in it as soon as I got in the front door. Their owner usually lets them out about three in the morning, so Rob went over there about midnight last night and they 'went' then, but I guess they needed to go again before I got there this morning!

Have been enjoying some of Teresa Cutter's recipes out of the May/June issue of Ultra Fit Magazine so ordered her 80/20 Diet book today. Looking forward to trying some more of her recipes.

Today's yummy food
- Vital Greens, soft-boiled omega-3 eggs, 2 slices gluten-free toast
- coffee with lactose-free milk
- apple
- Pumpkin, carrot and sweet potato soup

- Chicken breast with taco seasoning, corn cob, broccoli, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- Cocolo organic chocolate (dark 70% cocoa), hot protein drink

Saturday 20 June

Feeling a bit worn out today. All workouts and cardio done for the week. Shopping (with TJ in tow), housework and cooking for dinner guests done by 2pm. Then coffee break, dishes and walk the greyhounds from next door before guests arrived.

Friday 19 June

Woke up late again this morning (couldn't get to sleep last night) but felt pretty rested after seven hours' sleep. Blood sugar a little low though (a bit shaky and couldn't think straight when I got up). Had a couple of dates (yum!) as I was unpacking my fruit and vege order, then some extra carbs in my workout drink, so I was feeling pretty good by about halfway through my workout and was really enjoying myself. So will probably do something along similar lines for the next few workouts and see how I feel.

Was busy with dog duties today. Had to pop next door to check on Ollie, the West Highland Terrrier puppy, and also look after the two greyhounds across the road, Angel and Collette. And our dog, TJ.

A higher carb day today
- Vital Greens, 1/2 sc Dymatize Natural, 2 fresh dates
Train upper body (1/2 sc Dymatize Natural, 1 sc Gatorade)

Thursday 18 June

Have needed 10 hours sleep the last two nights running, so did an (almost) lactose- and gluten-free day today (inspired by the food intolerances planner in the May/June issue of Ultra Fit Magazine). Felt more alert during the day and didn't need a coffee this afternoon like I usually do, so am going to continue to eat like this for a while. Have ordered some chocolate Sun Warrior rice protein, which should be here next week, so am looking forward to trying that. I've had chocolate Ladybird rice protein but I don't really like the flavour, and the sweetener in it (sucralose) repeats on me. The Sun Warrior is sweetened with stevia, so I'm hoping it will be better. I think I've tried just about every other non-dairy protein available in Australia, and am slowly coming up with a few favourites, but they're not cheap!

Found leg training a bit harder today than on Monday. Possible reasons:
- had lots of starchy carbs Sunday night, none last night
- used legs a bit in circuit yesterday afternoon
- wore Skins when training legs on Monday but not during yesterday's circuit or today's training.

Food today
- Vital Greens, apple
Train legs (1 sc Dymatize Natural, 3/4 sc Gatorade)
- 1 serve Max's WPI, gluten-free apple and blueberry muffin
- large orange
- Low carb veg frittata, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- mixed nuts
- last night's kangaroo mince, peas, coconut cauliflower mash, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- goji berries
- tuna and avocado mash, carrot
- almonds, cashews

Wednesday 17 June

Slept in this morning so hit the gym late this afternoon instead. Was going to do some treadmill intervals today, but felt a bit nauseous doing them so gave up after a couple of attempts and did a circuit in the boxing area instead, which was 'awesome'.

- Vital Greens, Maple Walnut Apple Oatmeal
- Peanut Crunch Bar, coffee with lactose-free milk
- Tuna Salad Wrap, 1 Tbsp fish oil
circuit (skipping, speedball, skipping, ball toss, stair shuffle, speedball)
- apple, protein shake
- Low carb kangaroo bolognese, cashews, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- Peanut Crunch Bar, carrot

Tues 16 June

One good thing about training early in the morning is that I'm pooped by about 9.30 at night. If I train in the evenings, I'm often awake until about 1.30am.

Have been trying to concentrate on keeping my elbows in while doing bench press. It feels so much easier and I can feel my chest and front delts working more.

Today's food:
- Vital Greens, Maple Walnut Apple Oatmeal
Train upper body
- Maple Walnut Apple Oatmeal
- curried kangaroo sausages, red cabbage, cashews, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- Tuna Salad Wrap
- Peanut Crunch Bar, coffee with lactose-free milk
- beef pattie, cauliflower, cheese sauce, 1 Tbsp fish oil
- Peanut Crunch Bar, carrot
- almonds

Measurements Taken

Did weight, skinfolds, girth measurements and photos today. I'm currently the heaviest I've ever been in my life and I think 'round' is how I would describe myself at the moment. Being that time of the month doesn't help. It's a starting point anyway.

I'm going back to training in the mornings as of tomorrow (for consistency's sake), and will post what I do each day in my sidebar, so I can keep a running total of the amount of exercise I do each week.

Might blog what I eat each day too.

Changing My Habits

It's that time of year again. But instead of going on a 'diet' or counting calories, I am going to focus on changing my habits. Hopefully focusing on 'behaviours' rather an 'outcome' will lead to long-term success.

Habits I need to work on
- eating at night when I'm not hungry
- doing less than four hours a week of structured exercise
- eating meals in less than 20 minutes
- regularly 'dieting'
- having irregular sleep patterns
- drinking my calories (flat whites, alcohol)
- eating processed/refined grains
- spending two or more hours a day on the computer and/or watching TV
- surrounding myself with unhealthy people
- eating while doing other tasks (TV, reading, computer etc)

This gives me an initial idea of how to structure my goals.

My top 3 priorities
- create food that's simple, healthy and tastes great, so that I look forward to eating each meal
- do exercise that I enjoy, and make it an integral part of my life
- take it slow and find a strategy that works for me

'All-or-none' thinking
My 'all-or-none' mentality hurts me. I need to remember that nutrition and exercise are not black and white, they're on a spectrum. Life is going to get in the way of my best intentions, but there's plenty of grey area to take advantage of (do the best I can in the situation - it doesn't have to be perfect).

Measures to help me reach my goals
The only measures I've been using lately are how my clothes are fitting. I know I'm moving away from my goals because my clothes are getting tighter in all the wrong places. I will try other types of measures (photos, bodyweight, girths, skinfolds) to help me reach my goals; however, the aim is to prioritise health, and let my body composition fall into place.

Outcome-based decision making
I've tried to use outcome-based decision making in the past, but I get distracted by other food and exercise plans instead of measuring if what I'm doing at the moment is actually working. I need to choose something and stick with it for a couple of weeks, then measure to see if it's working. If it is, keep going. If not, adjust the plan, try for a couple more weeks and measure again. And so on.

Success Transcends
Elsewhere in my life I have been successful at completing a university degree and a diploma. The qualities required to complete these were perseverance, dedication, planning and focus. I can take those qualities and apply them to nutrition and exercise. This will leave no room for anything but success.

How Safe is Your Fish Oil?

From a Smart Publications e-newsletter by John Morgenthaler

After reading this newsletter, you'll understand how important fish oil is to your health and it is just as important to understand the serious quality issues involved in manufacturing, and choosing a safe and pure fish oil supplement.

High quality pharmaceutical grade products are tested for heavy metals, pesticides, including PCBs, DDT, dioxins, and peroxides. But that's only part of the story. Even the purest fish oil can produce harmful by-products due to bad processing. Not adding the proper antioxidants like rosemary extract, ascorbyl palmitate, and natural tocopherols at the right moment will lead to an unstable product that produces peroxides and turns rancid. The problem is that most manufacturers don't check peroxide levels and these result in free radicals that harm your health. Also, using the wrong equipment can lead to heavy metal contamination that will also damage product stability.

Does all this really matter? YES! It makes a difference in your health! Fish oil that contains contaminants, the wrong ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 acids, and/or peroxides will harm your health instead of protecting it!

When you shop for a fish oil, make sure you look for a product that has:

High levels of EPA and DHA per capsule

Low peroxide levels

Low level contaminants such as lead, mercury, pesticides, PCB's and dioxins

Antioxidants such as rosemary extract, ascorbyl palmitate, and natural tocopherols

Check the expiration date on the bottle, and cut open a capsule and taste the oil. If it tastes and smells like fish that's gone bad, don’t eat it! It is rancid oil. Even good oils will be fishy and oily but will not have that sharp, bitter, fishy smell of rancid fish oil. It is possible, however, to find a superb pharmaceutical-grade product that is SO GOOD, you can chew it down and won't mind the taste!

Eat to ease inflammation

By: Amy Dusseldorp, Nutritionist, originally posted at The Food Coach website

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is described as the body's basic response to injury, a protective process used when tissues are injured. Inflammation can be obvious, such as a swollen knee or itchy rash, however, internal inflammation occurring within the body on a smaller scale can lead to disease later in life. For example, continual inflammation of the vessels around the heart may contribute to stroke or heart disease, or prolonged irritation of the microvilli in the bowel may lead to inflammatory bowel disease. Even a simple headache indicates that certain blood vessels in your body are inflamed, causing them to throb and swell, resulting in pain such as a migraine. Even obesity is an inflammatory disease, with fat cells acting as inflammatory markers in the body.

Naturopath and Food Coach contributor Leah Hechtman says "It is very common for patients to present in clinic with generalised fatigue, aches and pains, headaches and aggravation of musculoskeletal complaints." This is inflammation on a minor scale and can often be helped by avoiding certain foods and increasing consumption of others.

How to prevent inflammation

It's impossible to prevent inflammation entirely as there are always bodily processes occurring that may lead to illness or injury, however, we can do our best.

Hechtman states "Research suggests that many common inflammatory conditions may be affected by certain food allergy, intolerance or sensitivity reactions that contribute to inflammatory symptoms. Removal of these foods from one's diet has been shown to significantly reduce common inflammatory symptoms & improve an individual's general health & well-being."

Foods that increase inflammation include sugar, alcohol, caffeine, high fat and processed foods and animal products high in saturated fats such as red meat. Luncheon meats and foods such as bacon, ham and salami often contain nitrites, which have been linked to the incidence of colorectal cancer by the World Cancer Research Fund.

Another possible source of inflammation comes from the Solonaceae family, otherwise known as the Nightshade group of foods. The chemical alkaloid solanine can trigger rheumatic pain in some people, who should try to avoid potatoes, tomatoes, capsicums, eggplant, chillies and tobacco.

Foods that prevent inflammation

Omega 3 fats help to produce hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which help regulate the inflammatory response. Foods such as salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil and walnuts are all great sources of Omega 3 fats and should be included regularly in the diet.

Garlic is a powerful anti-inflammatory food, containing compounds that inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, (the enzymes that generate inflammatory prostaglandins) thus noticeably reducing inflammation. Fresh garlic is better to consume in this case.

Vitamin C has also been shown to reduce inflammation, as a recent study at the University of California in Berkeley demonstrated. Researchers showed that Vitamin C can lower levels of C-reactive protein, a biomarker of inflammation that has been shown to be a powerful predictor of heart disease and diabetes. Vitamin C-rich foods include kiwi fruit, capsicum, tomatoes, broccoli, citrus fruits and berries.

A study by the Journal of Nutrition in April 2006 showed that cherries can significantly reduce inflammation, especially when eaten every day. Cherry juice in particular has been shown to reduce the pain of gout-associated inflammation as well as ease suffering for arthritis-related aches and pains.

Turmeric has been used for centuries as a medicinal tool in India and China to treat bruises, menstrual pain, flatulence and more. The pigment which colours turmeric yellow-orange, curcumin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory actions comparable to potent pharmaceutical drugs.

Ginger contains potent anti-inflammatory compounds known as gingerols, which have been shown to improve symptoms of patients suffering arthritis and osteoporosis. Ginger also promotes circulation, which may help further reduce inflammation as the blood is able to move freely around the body and bring nutrients to affect sites of inflammation.

Not technically a food, water is important to mention as it carries nutrients to and hydrates our cells, it detoxifies the body, regulates the metabolism and cushions the joints. Without enough water, the body's cells can't function properly - so eight glasses a day is essential for preventing inflammation. Tip: the next time you have a mild headache, try drinking one or two large glasses of water before popping a pain pill - chances are you're dehydrated and the headache will hopefully disappear.

Conclusion

You may not have heart disease, diabetes or osteoporosis but inflammation can affect everyone in some way. Whether it's a headache, acne or a persistently sore shoulder, consider the factors above and think about reducing your consumption of inflammatory products and increasing your intake of foods which may benefit your body

Common Sense

from an article by Jen Hamilton at Lean Bodies Consulting

I have witnessed far too many women looking their very best around their competition time, only to find them in a semi-depressed, out of shape condition a few short months later. What happened? First, we are not merely defined by how we look on competition day or the routine we perform. Each and everyday of our lives we shape who we are. If you find your self worth in those few weeks each year, then I urge you to step out of that bubble. Life itself is meant to be enjoyed. So back to the post competition “blues” (as I have heard it termed). I find too often in the fitness industry women supporting other women with the notion that is is OK to rebound. No it is not.

Think of it for a moment. You had a dream once. You did everything you could possibly could to reach those goals. Judgement day came. Wether the outcome of what those judges thought was to your liking or not, you still reached YOUR goals. Does it make much sense to you to take that dream and crush it with nonsense after you get where you wanted? I dont think so. While maintaining that competition-day-look is not healthy, staying in shape is.

If someone told you “you can never have a piece of cake again”, how would you feel? I’m going to bet you would think about the cake a lot. You would start to notice cake everywhere. You would crave it. Do you feel a sense of power when you deny yourself? That is false power. A short time later you find yourself laden in guilt for over “indulging” in not just one piece of cake but several. Here’s the thing, cake will always be there. Food, in our nation, is plentiful for most. That piece of cake should not define you or have the power to make you feel weak or strong.

After my competition period each year, you will find me eating cake. Not everyday, but yes I will enjoy it without guilt. If something is causing you guilt and you do not have a sense of peace about how you feel about something, then its time to make a change. Balance is a necessity, not a luxury. If you keep spinning your wheels year after year, you will never truly be satisfied with who you are and the life you are living IN THE MOMENT. While keeping a vision on your dreams is important, your now-life should not have to be sacrificed as a result. What good is reaching your dreams if you didn’t enjoy the journey it took to get there? If you can’t, then maybe its the wrong dream you have conjured.

My point is you need to find that happy medium now. Not later. Trust in your body, trust in your inner voice - that common sense. You know you hear it, don’t let it be drowned out anymore.

Skins short-sleeve top review

I bought a short-sleeve Skins top at the end of Feb, then I had about three months of almost non-existent training so didn't really get to wear it. Over the last couple of weeks I've been back in the gym training shoulders and back with Rob. I knew I would be going pretty heavy, so wore my short-sleeve Skins top each time. I trained in the evening, wore the top to bed, then got up the next morning and showered.

Pros:
- I don't get the usual ache in the shoulder-blade area from my old skiing injury.
- It keeps me nice and warm.
- It's pretty tight, so I can feel my muscles pressing against it as I get a pump in the gym, which is kinda cool.

Cons:
- It's pretty tight, so I don't feel comfortable wearing it on its own at the gym, especially since it's white. I always wear a t-shirt over it.
- It's pretty tight, so I look forward to taking it off after sleeping in it.

Summary:
- Worth it for me, as I don't get the usual injury-related aches.
- I'd probably go for a darker colour next time.

***

It's a beautiful day so I'm going to sit outside and proofread the cookies recipe book I'm working on. It has a section with wheat-free recipes. Rob is already making hints. Hmm...

Eating Seasonally

Just placed my fruit and vege order with Greenline for delivery tomorrow. Items on the specials list included avocadoes, green capsicum, cauliflower, dried apricots and pumpkin, so I decided to use these to form the basis for my meals next week. Lunches will be beef burger patties with garlic mashed cauliflower, and I'm going to do three different things for dinners:

- chicken fajitas in the crockpot (using the capsicum and avocado)
- Kek's Casablanca Chicken (using the dried apricots and pumpkin)
- Lamb & Chickpea Tagine (from the latest Coles brochure)

I'm getting the rest of my groceries delivered by Coles Online on Saturday, including organic meat and poultry.

On Saturday morning I'm planning to do some housework while waiting for the Coles delivery to arrive (there's a four-hour window for delivery), then once it's all packed away I'll head off to the gym. On Sunday morning I'll put the crockpot on with a double batch of one of the dinners mentioned above, and make up the lunches for the week.

Rob does great poached eggs (his contribution to the cooking!) so will probably be having those for breakfast most mornings, on top of refried beans - yum!

Other snacks during the day will be pretty simple to minimise cooking time and dishes (no dishwasher and I'm getting sick of facing a huge pile of dishes each day).

Gotta head off to the gym now. Legs!

That Does It!

My feet tell me when I've had too much of a food that doesn't agree with me. If I have too much wheat (especially bread) or sugar over the course of a few days, I get itchy welts on my feet.

And I know some dairy makes me feel bloated, and some protein powders make me feel tired, but I forgot how much until this morning. Because I was hungry yesterday, and had some chocolate whey in the house, I had a couple of serves of protein pudding with coconut last night. I've been waking up really easily all week, but this morning I struggled to get out of bed after 10 hours' sleep!

So I'm pretty sure I know what my body doesn't like, but I've decided I want some definite answers instead of just going on guesswork. Today when I was at Evelyn Faye I picked up a allergy food test:

Using a few drops of blood, the Allery-Food Check assessment will analyze your body's reaction to 96 different common foods through detection of food-specific IgG antibodies via ELISA methodology.

Allergic reactions to common foods such as milk, wheat, corn, soy, citrus, tomatoes and peanuts may be mistakenly attributed to passing viral infections or recurrent "colds". The relationship between the many common symptoms (including fatigue, headache, anxiety, as well as itchy runny nose and puffy eyelids) and the allergies that caused them may go unrecognized for years. Increased stress, recurrent infections or declining health may add to the burden of chronic allergies. Over the years, arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, autoimmune disease, eczema, and migraines, to name a few serious conditions linked with food allergies, can develop into chronic conditions if the offending allergens are not discovered and removed from the diet.

The 96 General Foods to be tested:

Dairy:
Casein, Cheese (Cheddar) Cheese (Cottage), Cheese (Mozzarella), Whey, Milk, Milk (Goat), Yogurt.

Fish/Crustacea/Mollusk:

Hungry!

I've really enjoyed walking TJ first thing in the morning the last couple of days - we avoid all the big dogs that go a bit later AND I get to hear the birds chirping as the sun comes up. I just start to get hungry as I get home, and I have my breakfast a few minutes later. But I've wanted my subsequent meals earlier than usual the last couple of days. I forgot how 'fasted' walking kicks my metabolism up a gear. I'm not deliberately walking before breakfast as a weight-loss mechanism though - just doing it cause I enjoy going then.

Ich mag mein Steak medium-roh

(I prefer my steak medium-rare)

Had steak for dinner last night and the leftovers for morning tea. The post title is in German as I'm proofreading some foreign-language products at the moment. Did Spanish at the start of the week, am currently doing German, and will probably be doing French at the end of the week.

Got up at 6am today to get my walk in. Didn't do one yesterday as I felt a bit pushed for time with work. On Monday I went at 8am (after brekky) but it was too busy in the park for my liking. This morning I got up, had some Vital Greens, checked my email and went straight away. Much better.

Three Ways to Manage Hunger

by Christian Thibaudeau

1) Eat only when you're physically hungry. Learn to distinguish between emotional pangs and the actual need to eat. To get a handle on your hunger, use the stopwatch trick. When you feel hungry, start a 15-minute countdown, and use that time to reflect on whether you need to eat or simply want to because of stress, boredom, or gluttony. Giving yourself a set time frame will prevent impulsive eating and will allow you to make better choices.

2) If you're training hard in an effort to add muscle and you aren't suffering from physical hunger more than three times per day, you're doing something wrong training wise. The need to adapt to training requires nutrients and energy. The training itself also requires a lot of energy. The more positive damage that's done during your workout, the more nutrients and calories your body will need to recover.

If you need more nutrients, your body will naturally send you the signal to eat more (you know, that grumbling below that pulls you to the fridge like a magnet). So, if your appetite is missing, it's because you're either lifting like a pansy or you have digestive problems.

3) If you're trying to lose fat, you'll obviously be hungrier, but you shouldn't be constantly ravenous, feeling deprived, or having deviant fantasies about Little Debbie. If you get a lot of cravings when dieting, it can be because:

• You aren't providing your body with all of the nutrients it needs (and you're likely deficient in some vitamins and minerals).

• Your fats and/or carbs are too low to fill your minimum daily needs. A common example is people who follow a low-carb diet while also greatly limiting their fat intake. Yes, we want to create an energy deficit, but we still must give our bodies enough fuel to function normally.

• You have a digestion problem, and thus, can't absorb all of the nutrients you ingest. If you don't absorb it, your body can't use it.

• You're dehydrated. A lot of people confuse thirst with hunger, so when you feel hungry, try downing eight to ten ounces of water, wait 15 minutes, and then see if you're still truly hungry or were just thirsty.

On a Brighter Note...

Going into town shortly to train back with Rob at his work, then going out for a friend's birthday dinner. Definitely having prawn rice paper rolls, but not sure what else yet.

Best Friends and 'Rant'

Snapped this pic of TJ (dog) and Oscar (cat) sharing the sunshine on the couch this afternoon. TJ is really good natured, but today I was wondering if I should train him to attack on command. I was walking him through the park (he was off the lead) when a guy (think in his late teens) rode past me, then circled me a couple of times.
Guy: 'fancy a head job?'
Me: 'pardon?'
Guy: 'fancy a head job??'
Me: 'FUCK OFF!'

This is probably the third time this has happened to me - I was also propositioned in a similar manner when I was probably about seven or eight, and an old guy tried to grab me between the legs when I walked past him when I was about 15. In addition to this I was sexually abused by my (male) babysitter when I was about six. It just makes me wonder WHAT MAKES SOME MEN THINK THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO THIS? FUCK OFF!!!

A Good Reason to Eat Organic Strawberries

Choice Magazine found higher than acceptable pesticide residues in strawberries from conventional farms (Choice magazine, February 2008). Their research found almost all conventionally grown strawberries contained some residues. They analysed strawberries from 31 growers across most states in Australia and found three contained pesticide residues at levels above the acceptable MRL’s (maximum residue levels), three had pesticides that regulations don’t allow, two contained more fungicide than is acceptable under stringent EU regulations, and seventeen strawberries had combination residues of more than one pesticide. And washing did not remove all of the pesticide residue! (from Green Tucker)

Cupcakes and Heavy Weights

Just finished proofreading a book on cupcakes. Forty-eight recipes with colour pics *drool*. Am meeting Rob at the gym this evening. Probably going to do back and shoulders.

Rob's always trained instinctively - never kept a training journal - just gets in there and goes as hard as he possibly can, and usually has to have a nap afterwards. I've followed programs since starting training for figure comps (July 2005), and after having a bit of a meltdown at the start of this year, I can't bear the thought of following a program. It kind of turns my stomach. I just want to get in there and enjoy myself without referring to a piece of paper and writing things down. I think it's the only way forward for me at the moment. I don't want to train for a purpose, I just want to train because I enjoy it.

Update: back from the gym. Just did shoulders - 4 sets of Arnold presses, 3 sets lat raises, 3 sets machine presses. Trained with my Skins top on and am going to sleep in in tonight. Hopefully I will be able to lift my arms above my head tomorrow!
PWO meal: kangaroo sausages, porridge with brown sugar.

God Bless the New Zealand Passport Office

My passport expired in October 2008. Because I wasn't planning to go anywhere until the end of June, I hadn't gotten around to renewing it. After Rob rang me early yesterday morning, I had to scramble to get it organised. I rang the New Zealand Passport Office in Sydney when it opened at 9am and found out what I needed for an urgent renewal. I knew I had to get the paperwork in the express post box by 6pm, so yesterday constisted of:
- sending an email to Rob to arrange the funeral home to fax our circumstances to the passport office
- getting hair and eyebrows done (way overdue so figured getting them done for the passport photo was as good a time as any)
- having passport photos taken and picking up an Express Post Platinum envelope
- reading and filling out 13 pages of forms
- finding someone that met the strict criteria to verify my photos

I managed to get photos verified by 5.30pm, then it was off to the post box.

Had a call at 2.30 this afternoon to say that they had received the paperwork and fax BUT... my marriage certificate wasn't an official one (just the presentation one they give you at your ceremony) so if I wanted my new passport ASAP they would just issue it in my maiden name again, and I could put it in my married name when I renewed it again in five years. I said YES, so they are couriering it to me overnight and I should have it in my hot little hands tomorrow.

***Lesson: renew your passport as SOON as it expires - you never know when you might need it!***

Topsy Turvy

Rob's dad took a turn for the worse yesterday morning, so Rob is flying back to NZ over the weekend. I have been meaning to renew my passport for a while now, and it looks as if I may have to put in an urgent request just in case I have to fly back next week.

Otherwise, things are going well. I'm enjoying work, getting a decent amount of sleep (although not getting to bed until the wee hours) and have managed to do a little bit of exercise each day this week (the most I've done for a couple of months!).
Mon walk TJ around block for warmup, then circuits at home
Tue walk TJ to park
Wed walk TJ around block for warmup, then circuits at home
Thu walk TJ to park
Fri walk TJ around block for warmup, then circuits at home

Will probably do some walking over the weekend too.

Am enjoying staying off the computer over the weekend, so will catch you on Monday.

Observations

- when I eat low-carb during the week it takes me longer to get to sleep at night, and I need more sleep
- when I switch to high-carb (eg on Friday night) I fall asleep quickly and need less sleep.
- I don't need 48 hours of 'relaxed' eating if a lot of it is crap food.

Eventful Week

On Tuesday my husband and I celebrated our birthdays (we are born on the same day, he is a year older). On Wednesday we found out Rob's dad was in hospital (he lives in New Zealand), and on Wednesday night he had his leg amputated above the knee. He has a history of kidney and heart problems, and the operation was pretty high risk but the tissue was dead and it had to come off before it spread any further. Luckily the operation went well, and his dad is in good spirits. He faces another couple of months in hospital, and we should be arriving over there on holiday around the time he comes out, so we can work out when and how he might need further assistance. Hopefully there will be no complications in the meantime.

On a lighter note, I've seen a few changes in my physique this week. Dropped a lot of water after TOM bloat disappeared, plus have been keeping my starchy carbs low during the week so less water retention there too. Don't know what the scales say - haven't been on them since Friday last week. Will weigh in again on Sat morning before weekend 'relax' starts.

How Do You Feel?

Since I didn't have enough energy to train for the last couple of months, I experimented with my diet a bit in an attempt to make myself feel better. Rather than than eating to change how I look, I ate to change how I felt. And I discovered something interesting about myself.

In March, to give myself more energy, I decided to up my carb intake to around 55% (from oats/quinoa, sweet potato, legumes, veggies and fruit) and dropped my fat intake to around 20%. Near the end of the month I had the worst PMS ever. Cravings, irritability, depression, frequently bursting into tears, etc.

So the next two weeks I bumped my fat back up to about 30%, and dropped carbs back to 30 to 40%, with the majority of carbs coming from veges - a LOT of veges - and oats with flax seeds at breakfast in the second week. By the end of the second week (just prior to Easter) I felt great - relaxed, increased libido - better than I've felt for a long time. I ate a lot of starchy carbs over Easter so the following week I dropped carbs way back and pushed my fats even higher during the week (up to 60%), relaxing and including more carbs again this weekend just gone. Yesterday I was surprised when my period arrived, because I had no PMS symptoms.

So at this stage I'm not sure if it was the fats, the HUGE amount of veggies, the tablespoons of flax seeds, or the large amounts of starchy carbs that I ate in the weekends that made the difference, or if it was a combination of all four, but I want to keep working it out, as after feeling so crap for the last couple of months, feeling great feels, well, great!

relaxed/strict start

Friday 17 April: 63kg (same as pre-Easter weight)

Plans for this weekend (relaxed)
Friday Quiet night, low-carb food in case Rob has to make weight for a grappling tournament on Saturday.
Saturday At a course for most of the day. Possible dinner out at a Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant after Rob's comp, plus birthday drinks at a local pub.
Sunday May have some house guests after Saturday night, so will probably do brunch and coffee together.

Will report back on Monday after my 'computer free' weekend.

Trying Something New

For the next four weeks I'm going to try a way of eating I've been thinking about for while: 'strict' weekdays, and 'relaxed' weekends. I'm choosing to do 'strict' weekdays because I work from home and my husband is often out from about 8am to 10pm, so when I eat it's not a social thing. The weekends are a time for me to catch up with family and friends. That might mean having a latte with my husband, or going out for drinks or brunch. During the weekends I don't want to be concerned with counting calories (there's the other five days of the week for me to do that). I just want to relax and enjoy myself.

I've also decided that I won't be using my computer on weekends. It's easy for me to spend hours on the internet when I could be doing other things. So on Friday nights I will be turning my PC off (and putting the laptop away), and not turning it on again until Monday morning.

So on Friday mornings I will post my training and food from Monday to Thursday, and my Friday-morning weight (as 'relaxed' weekend will start on Friday night), and on Mondays I will post my training and food from Friday to Sunday.

New Toy

When Rob started his Mixed Martial Arts training, he bought a sandbag to train with. It looks a bit like a gym bag, black with lots of handles on the outside to hold onto. It has a reinforced zip down the middle, which you can open up to add or remove filler bags. The filler bags are filled with sand, hence 'sandbag'. We have the 'advanced' size, which fits four 20lb filler bags and two 50lb filler bags, so you can have up to 180lbs (just over 80kg) in the bag. Rob finally got some sand today and filled up the 20lb bags, and I've found some ways I can use it:
